The America’s Cup Concert series rolls on, this time with a Thursday night concert by nerd-rockers Weezer with support from the Limousines.
While the attendance at the 9,000-capacity venue fell short of prior events, the respectably-sized crowd certainly made up for it with their enthusiasm … arriving early to secure those coveted spots up front and seemingly immune from the chill of the fog rolling off the bay.
Weezer kicked off the night with “My Name is Jonas” off of their 1994 debut and the fans dove right in, singing along from the front at the barrier all the way to the last row of the bleachers where everyone was already on their feet. The band sounded tight as can be as they wound their way through a set that included all the hits from their 20+ year career. It’s hard to believe that it’s been that long.
Keeping the show short on talk, Rivers opted to sing and strum an ode to California … his Island in the Sun … which was met with a sizable roar from the audience and a thundering of feet on the aluminum bleachers (likely intended at least in some part to stimulate warmth). As he’s done in past live shows, Rivers handed off vocals to Brian (Keep Fishin’) and Scott (Dope Nose) on a few songs to mix things up. All-in-all a great show though a fairly predictable setlist.
