Motley Crue

Mötley Crüe hit Concord’s Sleep Train Pavilion along with tour mates Kiss for local rock station 107.7’s thirteenth annual Bone Bash. If you happened to catch The Crüe on last year’s headlining tour, you’ll no doubt remember Tommy Lee’s drum coaster as the center piece of the on-stage action. While bringing it back for another tour, the band took the live action a step further by bringing in a “Cirque du Soleil”-like vibe.

As the set time rolled close, the big screen displayed a giant clock counting down the seconds. But rather than taking the stage from the side, the band entered the amphitheater as a procession down the aisle between the 100 and 200 sections before eventually taking the stage to Saints of Los Angeles amongst a masked stage crew and hooded characters on stilts. The circus theme didn’t end there … ladies dangling from ribbons, explosions, fire spewing from Nikki’s bass, and of course the upside down drum solo all contributed to a rather chaotic experience.

With an hour to play, Mötley Crüe stuck with the tried-and-true with the exception of dropping in their latest single Sex. Those lucky enough to be up front for the spectacle may have gone home a little damp; taking a page from Ozzy’s playbook, they ended the show with Tommy heaping a few buckets of water on the front few rows after Nikki had already liberally spat water from a Camelback over some less-lucky fans (making for what had to be the most bizarre moments of the night). But while the on-stage antics at times felt random, they added some unpredictability to an otherwise predictable set.
