Steel Panther brought their “Balls Out Tour” to San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom in support of their latest release. Partly a tribute to (but mostly parody of) 80’s hair metal bands, Steel Panther brings a whole lot of entertainment … at least for those that are not easily offended (songs like It Won’t Suck Itself, Eatin’ Ain’t Cheatin’ and Weenie Ride are exactly what you probably think they’re about).
The big question for Thursday night’s show was how Steel Panther would be received by San Francisco; where metal is more associated with Bay Area thrash than the glam of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip. In fact it wasn’t so long ago that one of the hairiest of hair bands, Ratt, did a headlining show in the Bay Area that maybe sold around 200 tickets. Well, the sign on the wall at the Regency states capacity at 1290 people and if the show wasn’t sold out, it was pretty darned close; the floor packed with a pretty diverse set of fans (including some done-up in in wigs and leather for the occasion) intent on a good time.
It was all there … teased hair, spandex pants, ripped shirts, the obligatory over-the-top guitar solo (replete with licks borrowed from Metallica, Sabbath, and GnR), and between-song banter that should make you think twice before bringing your kids to this show (not to mention a healthy dose of exposed breasts). But at least with Steel Panther there is no pretense that any of it is meant to be taken seriously and the San Francisco crowd certainly embraced the theatrics wholeheartedly.
